Frank Weston Benson
Salem, Massachusetts, 1862-1951
Of wealthy stock, he attended the Académie Julian in Paris in 1883 and spent his summers at the artist's colony in Concarneau. He travelled to Germany, to London, and to Italy in 1884 and '85. Returning to America, he taught with Tarbell at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts school. The two men helped found the Ten American Painters group in 1897. His favourite subjects were women and children.
