Anish Kapoor. Untrue Unreal<\/em>\u00a0unfolds across the Renaissance courtyard and the Piano Nobile galleries of\u00a0Palazzo Strozzi, tracing a path through Kapoor’s diverse practice that challenges notions of form and formlessness, fiction and reality.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the courtyard<\/strong>,\u00a0Void Pavilion VII<\/em> (2023), created with support from the\u00a0Hillary Merkus Recordati Foundation<\/em>, greets visitors with three vast rectangular voids that invite meditative immersion in space, perspective, and time, disrupting the building’s rational geometry.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Piano Nobile<\/strong>, the exhibition opens with\u00a0Svayambhu<\/em> (2007), a massive block of red wax that slowly traverses rooms, shaping its formless matter against the architecture, in dialogue with\u00a0Endless Column<\/em> (1992)\u2014a nod to Br\u00e2ncu\u0219i\u2014and\u00a0To Reflect an Intimate Part of the Red<\/em> (1981), fragile pigment forms emerging ethereally from the floor.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Non-Object Black<\/em> (2015)\u00a0employs\u00a0Vantablack<\/em>\u00a0to absorb over 99.9% of visible light, dissolving objecthood itself, echoed in\u00a0Gathering Clouds<\/em> (2014)’s brooding, space-devouring concavities that provoke reflections on immateriality and perception.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dedicated room explores flesh, body, and entropy through works like\u00a0A Blackish Fluid Excavation<\/em> (2018)\u2014a twisted uterine void in steel and resin\u2014and silicone paintings such as\u00a0First Milk<\/em> (2015),\u00a0Tongue Memory<\/em> (2016),\u00a0Today You Will Be in Paradise<\/em> (2016), and\u00a0Three Days of Mourning<\/em> (2016), evoking pulsating viscera and tactile transformation.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirrored sculptures\u00a0Vertigo<\/em> (2006),\u00a0Mirror<\/em> (2018), and\u00a0Newborn<\/em> (2019)\u00a0blur subject-object boundaries, distorting space into illusionary realms that defy physics and draw viewers into destabilizing infinity.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The path concludes with\u00a0Angel<\/em> (1990): slate slabs coated in intense Prussian blue pigment, heavy yet sky-like, embodying the alchemical fusion of opposites\u2014material solidity and ethereal mystery.\u200b<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Born in Mumbai, India in 1954, Anish Kapoor<\/a> has lived and worked in London since studying sculpture at Hornsey College of Art and Chelsea College of Art in the mid-seventies. More recently dividing his time between studios in London and Venice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His works are permanently exhibited in the most important collections and museums around the world from the Museum of Modern Art in New York to the Tate in London; the Prada Foundation in Milan and the Guggenheim Museums in Venice, Bilbao and Abu Dhabi. Recent solo exhibitions have been held at Galleria dell\u2019Accademia di Venezia & Palazzo Manfrin, Venice, Italy (2022); Modern Art Oxford, UK (2021); Houghton Hall, Norfolk, UK (2020); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany (2020); Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum and Imperial Ancestral Tempie, Beijing (2019); Fundaci\u00f3n Proa, Buenos Aires (2019); Serralves, Museu de Arte Contemporanea, Porto, Portugal (2018); University Museum of  Contemporary Art (MUAC), Mexico City (2016); Chateau de Versailles, France (2015); Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, Moscow, (2015); Gropius Bau, Berlin (2013); Sakip Sabanci Muzesi, Istanbul (2013); Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2012).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anish Kapoor represented Great Britain at the 44th Venice Biennale in 1990 where he was awarded the Premio Duemila Prize. In 1991 he won the Turner Prize and has gone on to receive numerous international awards and honours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also renowned for his architecturally scaled works, public projects include: Cloud Gate (2004), Millennium Park, Chicago, USA; Leviathan (2011) exhibited at Monumenta, Paris, France; Orbit (2012), Oueen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London; Ark Nova, an inflatable concert hall created for Lucerne Festival, Japan (2013); Descension (2014) most recently installed in Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York, USA (2017) and the soon to be completed Traiano and Universit\u00e1 Monte St Angelo Metro Stations, Naples, Italy (2002\u20132023).<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n\n
