Anselm Kiefer. Fallen Angels<\/em>\u00a0stands as a major exhibition conceived by the artist in direct dialogue with Palazzo Strozzi’s spaces, spanning the Piano Nobile galleries and Renaissance courtyard. Through twenty-five historical and recent works\u2014including an immersive installation of sixty canvases of varying sizes\u2014it explores Kiefer’s diverse practice encompassing painting, sculpture, installation, and photography.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the courtyard<\/strong>,\u00a0Engelssturz<\/em> (2022\u20132023), supported by the Hillary Merkus Recordati Foundation and exceeding seven meters in height, depicts the battle between the archangel Michael and rebel angels from the Book of Revelation\u2014a metaphor for Good and Evil\u2014inviting reflection on spirit and matter against the Renaissance architecture.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Piano Nobile<\/strong>,\u00a0Luzifer<\/em> (2012\u20132023)\u00a0evokes the fallen angel with a menacing lead airplane wing protruding from chaotic matter, symbolizing war and human devastation.\u00a0F\u00fcr Antonin Artaud: Helagabale <\/em>(2023)\u00a0and\u00a0Sol invictus Heliogabal <\/em>(2023)\u00a0reinterpret Emperor Heliogabalus, featuring recurrent Kieferian motifs like sunflowers and snakes as allegories of sun, earth, regeneration, and Van Gogh.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Philosophy section\u00a0spotlights new works:\u00a0La Scuola di Atene <\/em>(2022),\u00a0Vor Sokrates<\/em> (2022), and\u00a0Ave Maria <\/em>(2022)\u00a0trace philosophy’s shift from cosmology to ethics;\u00a0Hortus Philosophorum<\/em> (1997\u20132011)\u00a0unites sunflowers, the human body, and Robert Fludd, symbolizing earth-sky union and initiatory path.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vitrines\u00a0like\u00a0En Sof <\/em>(2016)\u00a0(kabbalistic),\u00a0Das Balder-Lied <\/em>(2018)\u00a0(Scandinavian),\u00a0Danae<\/em>\u00a0(mythological), and\u00a0Locus solus <\/em>(2019\u20132023)\u00a0(Roussel) employ lead and glass for isolated microcosms, evoking alienation, alchemy, and literature (Joyce, mythology).\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immersive installation\u00a0Verstrahlte Bilder<\/em> (1983\u20132023)\u00a0fills walls and ceiling with sixty scarred, radiation-faded canvases, plus central mirrors, immersing viewers in Kiefer’s stratified art\u2014hauntingly exploring destruction, decay, and life’s fragility via oil, shellac, and fabric.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth and memory\u00a0themes appear in\u00a0Der Rhein<\/em> (1982\u20132013),\u00a0Dem unbekannten Maler<\/em> (2013),\u00a0Daphne<\/em> (2008\u20132011),\u00a0Nemesis<\/em> (2017), and\u00a0Ave Maria turris eburnea<\/em> (2017). The show closes with\u00a0Heroische Sinnbilder<\/em>\u00a0(lead-printed photos, 1969) on Nazi “Occupations,” and Quasimodo’s verses inscribed by Kiefer: \u201cEveryone stands alone at the heart of the earth \/ pierced by a ray of sun \/ and it is suddenly evening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Born in 1945 in Donaueschingen, Germany, Anselm Kiefer<\/strong> is one of the most important and versatile artists working today. His artistic practice incorporates diverse media, including painting, sculpture, photography, woodcut, artist\u2019s books, installations and architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kiefer studied law and romance languages before pursuing studies in fine art at academies in Freiburg and Karlsruhe. As a young artist, he entered into contact with Joseph Beuys and participated in his action Save the Woods <\/em>(1971). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early works confronted the history of the Third Reich and engaged with Germany\u2019s post-war identity as a means of breaking the silence over the recent past. Through parodying the Nazi salute or visually citing and deconstructing National Socialist architecture and Germanic heroic legends, Kiefer explored his identity and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1971 until his move to France in 1992, Kiefer worked in the Odenwald, Germany. Throughout this time, he started incorporating into his work materials and techniques which are now emblematic\u2013lead, straw, plants, textiles and woodcuts\u2013along with themes such as Wagner\u2019s Ring Cycle<\/em>, the poetry of Paul Celan and Ingeborg Bachmann, as well as Biblical connotations and Jewish mysticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist first received major international attention for his work when he represented West Germany alongside Georg Baselitz at the 39th<\/sup> Venice Biennial in 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mid-1990s marks a shift in his work; extensive travels throughout India, Asia, America and Northern Africa inspired interest in the exchange of thought between the Eastern and Western worlds. Structures resembling ancient Mesopotamian architecture enter the work. Glimmers of Southern France\u2019s landscapes appear, evidenced by depictions of constellations or the inclusion of plants and sunflower seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An avid reader, Kiefer\u2019s works are layered with literary and poetic references. These associations are not necessarily fixed nor literal, but rather overlap into an interwoven fabric of signification. The interest in books being both text and object is evident in his work. Since the beginning of his practice, artist\u2019s books have constituted a significant part of his oeuvre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond making paintings, sculptures, books and photographs, Anselm Kiefer has intervened in various sites. After converting a former brick factory in H\u00f6pfingen, Germany, into a studio, he created installations and sculptures that became part of the site itself. A few years after his move to Barjac, France, Kiefer again transformed the property around his studio by excavating the earth to create a network of underground tunnels and crypts that connect to numerous art installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This studio-site is now a part of the Eschaton-Anselm Kiefer Foundation<\/a><\/em>, which is open to the public. The opening of the foundation in 2022 coincided with Kiefer\u2019s return to Venice, where a cycle of paintings inspired by the writings of Italian philosopher Andrea Emo was installed at Doge\u2019s Palace, shown in parallel to the biennial.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n\n
