the florence experiment

Conference by Carsten Höller and Stefano Mancuso

19 April 2018 time 18:30 |

Cinema Odeon, Firenze

The German artist Carsten Höller and the Italian scientist Stefano Mancuso will meet the public at the Odeon Cinema in Florence on Thursday 19 April at 18.30 to talk about the great site specific project for Palazzo Strozzi The Florence Experiment (19 April-26 August 2018): a fantastically innovative experiment studying the interaction between human beings and plants thanks to the installation of two monumental slides in the Renaissance courtyard and a special scientific laboratory connected to the façade of Palazzo Strozzi.

An entomologist and researcher before becoming an artist, Carsten Höller is well-known for his work midway between art, science and technology, with installations always designed strongly to involve the audience. He has cooperated on this unique project with Stefano Mancuso, one of the founders of the discipline known as plant neurobiology which concerns itself with the study of the intelligence of plants, analysed as complex beings endowed with astonishing sensitivity and the capacity to communicate with their surrounding environment through the chemical compositions that they manage to perceive and to emit.

Introduces the conference Arturo Galansino, project curator and Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi Director.

Admission at the Cinema Odeon is free while places last.

For the exhibition The Florence Experiment at Palazzo Strozzi a ticket must be purchased.

Since its inception, the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi has clearly declared its mission to be ‘not just exhibitions’. Exhibitions at Palazzo Strozzi have been considered a means to reach the Fondazione’s main goal: to help make Florence a dynamic contemporary city, and thereby contribute to renewed quality tourism, increased economic growth, and a better quality of life for its citizens. The Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi uses its exhibitions to create exciting new ways for tourists and citizens alike to explore the city, the county and the entire region of Tuscany. These innovative programmes include special itineraries, guided visits to the studios of contemporary artists, travelling street theatre performances and international conferences. The main ‘laboratory’ is the Palazzo Strozzi, but the experiments happen throughout the city and beyond.
