Bill Viola. Electronic Renaissance

Grande Museo del Duomo and Bill Viola

On the occasion of Bill Viola. Electronic Renaissance the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi is taking the show out of the palazzo and into other venues in Florence through the creation of specific cultural joint ventures designed to enhance visitors’ experience of destinations and cultural assets.
One of this venues is the Grande Museo del Duomo: a single, vast museum encompassing the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Brunelleschi’s dome, Giotto’s bell tower, the Baptistry of San Giovanni, the crypt of Santa Reparata and the new museum itself, that allows visitors to explore seven centuries of history.

On the occasion of the great Bill Viola’s exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi, two of his works will interact with the new Museum’s masterpieces: Viola’s Acceptance (2008, 8’14”, HD black and white video), reflecting on the passage of time and on man’s interior transformation process, is displayed in dialogue with one of Donatello’s most celebrated and dramatic sculptures, the Penitent Magdalen (c. 1455).
Viola’s Observance (2002, 10’14”, HD colour video), in which an uninterrupted flow of people move solemnly forward, overcome by emotion, staring – in a shared sentiment – at an object in front of them but which the observer cannot see, interacts with the Pietà Bandini by Michelangelo (1547–55), the masterpiece of Michelangelo’s later years testifying to his faith and which he had intended should be placed at the foot of the altar where he thought he was going to be buried.
To strengthen this unique joint venture, the Bill Viola. Electronic Renaissance exhibition, the new Opera del Duomo Museum and the Baptistry of San Giovanni could all be visited with a special joint ticket starting 10 March until 23 July 2017.
