27 September 1979

On 27 September 1979 the Stars collective, of which Ai Weiwei is one of the founder members, holds a collective exhibition on the pavement of the China Art Gallery in Beijing. The exhibition is declared illegal the next day and forced to close on 29 September. The collective wished to see the development of artistic expressions different from the socialist realism of Soviet inspiration enforced by the government.
