February 1981 – Ai Weiwei moves to the United States and studies English in Philadelphia and at Berkeley.
In January 1982 the Asia Foundation Gallery in San Francisco hosts Ai Weiwei’s first one-man exhibition, comprising thirty pictures painted in China.
