Tradition and modernity in China on the silver screen

In the occasion of the exhibition Ai Weiwei. Libero, the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and the Odeon Cinema invite you to join them on a journey through the 20th century and beyond in the shape of four films that tell the story of the transition from China’s glorious ancient civilisation to the contradictions of the modern era: two masterpieces by master filmmaker Zhang Yimou, Raise the Red Lantern and House of Flying Daggers, celebrating the myths and rituals of a country deeply bound to its own culture; the magnificent fresco that is Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor; and Jia Zhang-ke’s breathtaking Still Life (which won the Gold Lion in Venice in 2006), which tells the story of the slide into absurdity that has taken hold of “modern” China.

Calendar:

Tuesday 25 October, 20.30
Raise the Red Lantern directed by Zhang Yimou (China, 1991, 125’).

Tuesday 22 November, 20.30
The Last Emperor directed by Bernardo Bertolucci (China, IT, UK, FR, 1987, 163’).

Tuesday 20 December, 20.30
House of Flying Daggers directed by Zhang Yimou (China, 2004, 119’).

Tuesday 17 January, 20.30
Still Life directed by Jia Zhang-Ke (China, 2007, 108’).

The challenge facing the Fondazione from the outset has been to bring international quality exhibition and cultural events to Florence and Tuscany.

On the palazzo’s Piano Nobile and in the Strozzina area the Fondazione organises art exhibitions ranging from the art of the ancient world via the Renaissance to the modern and contemporary era.

From: 23 September 2016
To: 22 January 2017
