Engelssturz Work by Anselm Kiefer for the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi with the Fondazione Hillary Merkus Recordati

The exhibition Anselm Kiefer. Fallen Angels in the rooms of Palazzo Strozzi begins with the work Engelssturz (Fall of the Angel), conceived and created by the artist specifically to dialogue with the Renaissance courtyard, emphasizing the fusion between tradition and contemporaneity.

Characterized by a powerful materiality and imposing dimensions exceeding seven meters in height, the painting depicts the famous passage from the Book of Revelation that describes the battle between the Archangel Michael and the rebellious angels, a metaphor for the struggle between Good and Evil. Michael stands out against a golden background, symbol of the metaphysical world, while the angels plummet into the dark area of the painting, the material world. Enhanced by the context of this space open towards the sky, the work becomes the starting point of the exhibition and invites us to reconsider the relationship between celestial and earthy dimensions.

Engelssturz was realized as part of Palazzo Strozzi Future Art programme developed with the support of the Fondazione Hillary Merkus Recordati.
