Making Art Accessible 2018 Museums and inclusion - second international conference

29–30 November 2018

Confirming its commitment to the enhancement and dissemination of practices designed to promote inclusion in museums, the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi will be hosting the second edition of its international conference Making Art Accessible. Museums and inclusion at Palazzo Strozzi on 29 and 30 November 2018.

The conference, this year’s new meeting for exploring museum practices in greater depth, follows in the footsteps our previous events entitled Art School Museum (2015, 2017) and Accessible Art (2016). In the course of the two-day event, presentations and workshops devoted to the relationship between art and disability will fuel a debate on the role of museums and exhibition centres, which are increasingly being transformed from areas for mere conservation and display into social venues focusing on visitors and their experience with art, thus enhancing museums’ nature as areas for encounter and participation in society.

The conference provides an opportunity for networking programmes, schemes, approaches, successes and challenges through examples of best practice at the international level which can serve as models for emulation and provide a stimulus at both the regional and national levels.

Professionals and experts from such institutions as the Tate Modern in London, the Kunstmuseum in Bonn, the Museo Picasso in Málaga, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Museion in Bolzano will be illustrating some of the most important schemes designed to make museum spaces accessible to people suffering from physical or psychological disabilities and other forms of fragility. The conference will also be hosting experiments conducted by artists such as the Atelier dell’Errore and Wurmkos, and a focus on Parkinson’s with the intervention of Dr. Daniele Volpe from Fresco Parkinson Institute and Dance Well.

The two-day event is designed to offer museum and health care professionals, educators, relatives and patients a chance to share their experiences, to debate and to familiarise with new working methodologies and to discover a new horizon of possibilities and experiences with art.

This initiative has been made possible by, and developed in collaboration with, the Fresco Parkinson Institute, a renowned international centre for care and research into Parkinson’s disease and mobility-related conditions.

Due to the large number of applications received, we regret that no more places are available
