For universities and art academies

from 14 March 2026
to 23 August 2026

Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi presents one of the largest exhibitions ever devoted in Italy to Mark Rothko, the undisputed master of modern art. Rothko in Florence is a unique project, conceived specifically for Palazzo Strozzi, celebrating the special bond between Rothko and the city.

The exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi unfolds chronologically, tracing the full arc of Rothko’s career: from the 1930s and 1940s, marked by figurative works in dialogue with Expressionism and Surrealism, to the 1950s and 1960s, distinguished by the celebrated abstract canvases created through expansive fields of colour capable of profoundly engaging the viewer through a visual language imbued with spirituality and poetry. On view are works from prestigious private collections and leading international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Tate, London; the Centre national d’art et de culture Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.

The visit designed for university and art academy students follows a dedicated itinerary conceived to engage with the development of Rothko’s practice, informed by the architecture and European art he encountered and studied during three significant journeys between the 1950s and 1960s.
