At the conclusion of theFree Flowing, experiencing art with Parkinson’s project, the galleries of the exhibition Rothko in Florence host the public performance Breathing the Art.
Dancers bring performative actions in relation to the paintings of Mark Rothko, suggesting a deep immersion in his large fields of colour through movement, silence, and contemplation.
These actions invite visitors to slow down and observe the works over an extended period of time, allowing them to perceive the layers of colour, the harmonies, and the contrasts between the the harmonies and contrasts of the colours explored by the artist. The bodies of the dancers, like the vast chromatic fields of Mark Rothko, seem to breathe within the space and move in search of the deepest essentiality.
The performance offers the opportunity to experience the exhibition in an unusual way: dance and gestures transform the galleries into an evocative dialogue between bodies and artworks, encouraging a more intimate relationship with the paintings and inviting visitors to discover the expressive power of colour.
Free Flowing
Free Flowing is a project open to everyone, with particular attention to the wellbeing of people living with Parkinson’s. The programme renewed with each exhibition in order to engage with artworks through words, movement, and dance.
The project began in autumn 2018 through an exchange with the experiences of the Parkinson Centre at Villa Margherita (Kos Care) in Vicenza and of Dance Well. Following an initial experimental phase, the programme became part of the activities that Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi organises in connection with each exhibition.
