What is a fragment? It is what remains of something bigger; it is the result of a break; it is something to be reconstructed and cared for; it is a story, an unsolved mystery, the beginning of something new, and much more.
The exhibition Broken. The Power of the Fragment brings together pieces of sculptures from different cultures, places and periods, as well as works by modern and contemporary artists who have used fragments as inspiration
Making and Remix is the activity that Palazzo Strozzi offers to families with children aged 7 to 12. It starts in the exhibition rooms, where artworks and artefacts become the starting point for individual observations, group discussions, sensory experiences and activities. During the visit, we focus on a selection of fragments to discover their stories: from their original context to their discovery, from the break that created them to the transformation of their meaning over time. Once incomplete parts, the fragments thus become autonomous works in their own right, capable of sparking curiosity, opening up spaces for the imagination, and leaving us with many questions still unanswered.
In the second part of the activity, in the education room, we draw inspiration from the Japanese art of kintsugi to fill cracks with color and reassemble damaged objects, celebrating the beauty of fragility. In this way, we make what is broken and imperfect more precious than it was when it was whole.
Make and Remix is designed to be experienced together by adults and children: the exhibition thus becomes an opportunity to enjoy art in family.
The exhibition’s family activities are made possible thanks to the support of Gruppo Beyfin S.p.A.
